Dear Parents,

This has been a busy and successful week. Yesterday we had our Chusok Festival, and despite the rain the students had a wonderful time making songpyun and playing the many folk games. Thank you to all the mothers who helped with the games.

Today, we finally had our International Food and Culture Festival. I’m happy to say it was a success and that all students enjoyed the cooking experience. We cooked Italian spaghetti and meatballs with garlic toast. The food was delicious! Thanks again to all the mothers who brought in the cooking equipment and helped. You have really had two busy days helping class 3-1, and Mrs. Choi, the students, and myself are lucky to have such great moms.^^ I have uploaded some pictures of the events to our class website at www.3-1kisq.blogspot.com

Because of last week’s dangerous “typhoon,” I did not make a Daily English or Weekly Spelling test for this week (two tests is too much to study for in one week). I will include a list of study items for next week however.

For the Golden Week, I have told the students about some optional homework that they can complete if they have time. Many students will be busy going to Korea or traveling, so this homework is not mandatory. Students who do complete this homework will receive 5 stickers.

The project I would like them to complete is called a “diorama.” This is a 3D (three dimensional) miniature model inside a box depicting a scene of the student’s choice. I have informed the students how to do this, and will put some information here so parents can help.

Here are examples:

The box can be of any size, but a shoe box is best. The front of the box can be completely open, or have just a “peep hole” that people can look through to see the inside. If it is dark inside, a window can be put on the top of the box to allow light to come inside. Students can use toys, paper, dolls, or anything they can think of to put inside. They may choose any scene to depict. Some ideas included dinosaurs, animals, a house, aliens, or even Rome in Italy as the picture above shows. I hope this is a fun project to keep them busy when they are bored next week.

Now, to update about what we did this week and what we will do next week.

Reading

We finished reading “The Cat in the Hat” by Dr. Seuss. This is a famous children’s book that rhymes as a poem. Students are welcome to take these books home but they must return them within a few days in good condition.

English with Mr. Bean

This week we studied the episode “The Bottle.” The video and question sheets are available on the class website if you wish to review them.

Science

This week we didn’t study science due to being busy, but soon we will have a small test.

Megaflash

This week’s busy schedule and problems caused by the “typhoon” made it impractical to have the test this week. After vacation we will have it.

Oral

The students wrote their own dialogues with partners this week and practiced and performed them in front of the class. This is a fun activity we will do more of.

Now here is the spelling list for next week.

1. diorama
2. three dimensional
3. miniature
4. model
5. cancel
6. dialogue
7. antique
8. guard

12. machine
13. slam
14. boil
15. pasta
16. sauce
17. garlic
18. meatball
19. Venice

Now here is this week’s Daily English. Last week most students scored 10/10! Maybe they are too easy.

Dear Parents,

This has been a busy week, and next week will be even busier. Thanks to all the parents who attended the PTA meeting on Monday. The safety issues regarding the construction on Haiqing Lu have been discussed with all students, and we hope there will be no further problems.

On Tuesday, Mr. De Souza and myself conducted an assembly to inform the students about the upcoming International Food and Culture Festival on Friday, September 21st. We had a lottery, and each grade in the IED randomly chose a country to represent. Third grade chose Italy, and we will study Italy in preparation for the festival. We have decorated our classroom with an Italian theme, and we will cook spaghetti and meatballs with garlic toast with class 3-2. To see a video that introduces the festival, you may visit the class website at www.3-1kisq.blogspot.com or go to http://youtube.com/watch?v=QLS1rI6MLeU

Similar to our last cooking day when we made fruit salad, our class will need help from mothers to supply cooking materials. We will need three gas-range stoves, and large pots for cooking the noodles and tomato sauce. We will also need a large frying pan to cook the meatballs, and toaster ovens to toast the garlic bread. Mrs. Choi will be in contact next week to inform about this. Hopefully it will be a fun and interesting day with lots of delicious food from around the world!

Now, to update about what we did this week and what we will do next week.

Reading

We finished reading “The Adventures of Frog and Toad.” Next week we will begin a new book. Students are welcome to take these books home but they must return them within a few days in good condition.

English with Mr. Bean

This week we studied the episode “Car Trouble.” The video and question sheets are available on the class website if you wish to review them.

Science

This week we learned about hurricanes, tornados, tsunami etc. Next week we will focus on earthquakes and tornados. I encourage students to take the science book home and review with tutors, as it seems students have trouble with the science-related sentences in Daily English.

Megaflash

We are on almost finished Unit 7. I am preparing the students to write a test next week. I have spent a lot of time reviewing the things we learned before summer vacation. When the Megaflash book is finished, I am considering moving on to the Let’s Go series, perhaps studying level 5.

Italy

This week, we learned a lot about Italy, and we decorated our classroom. I do intend to continue studying Italy similar to how we studied Egypt, and I would like to test them in this information.

Now here is the spelling list for next week.

Friday, September 7th, 2007

Dear Parents,

On Monday, September 10th, at 1:00 pm, KISQ will hold a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meeting. All parents are invited to hear about changes to our curriculum, and to meet some of our new teachers. Please try to attend.

For next week, I would like to add a theme to our Show and Tell time. I would like all students to try and participate in order to practice speaking and answering questions in a group. Last week our theme was souvenirs, and this week I would like to try “Interesting Pictures.” Students can bring in any photo or picture they find interesting – be it printed from the internet or taken from a family vacation.

Now, to update about what we did this week and what we will do next week.

Reading

This week, we began to read a longer version of the book called “The Adventures of Frog and Toad.” We will spend one more week on this excellent book and we will complete some comprehension exercises as well. It seems students prefer the “Curious George” series however.

English with Mr. Bean

Last week we watched the Mr. Bean episode “In the Wild.” This week we watched “Missing Teddy.” I am happy to see that students enjoy and learn from this activity. The video and question sheets are available on the class website if you wish to review them.

Science

This week we learned about the “water cycle,” and we have now begun to move onto “natural disasters” and “weather.” Students will learn about hurricanes, tornados, tsunami etc. There are fun experiments that go along with this study.

Megaflash

We are on Unit 7, page 118. We are focusing on frequency, adverbs of frequency, and “how often” grammatical structures. Students are now applying more of their own words and ideas into the grammar they learn in class, which makes class more fun and interactive.

Poetry

This week, we learned how to use all the verbs, nouns, and adjectives we have spent so much time studying in order to write a “diamonte” poem. I was amazed at how well the students completed their assignments in class. They are now able to do creative writing that is abstract and expressive. I thought that perhaps the activity would be too difficult for them as the lesson is designed for 6th grade students, but every student in class did well beyond my expectations. These poems are on display in our classroom. We will continue to study poems in the future.

Now here is the spelling list for next week. Many deal with Science and the different events in weather. Others deal with Megaflash and frequency. Many are from Mr.Bean.

1. frequency
2. seldom
3. usually
4. often
5. drought
6. erosion
7. hurricane
8. typhoon
9. tsunami
10. veterinarian
11. thieves
12. groceries
13. searching
14. vanished
15. accident
16. stealing
17. dangerous
18. poetry
19. creative
20. syllables

Now here is this week’s Daily English, dealing with frequency, science, and giving reasons using “because”:

1. *Make a frequency sentence using always. Ex: We always go to church on Sundays.

________________________________________________________________________

2. *Make a frequency sentence using never. Ex: I never go to bed after 1:00 am.

________________________________________________________________________

3. *Make a frequency sentence using usually.

________________________________________________________________________

4. Drought happens when there isn’t enough rain. Soil dries up and plants can’t grow.
5. A hurricane is a very strong storm with wind and rain. They cause floods.
6. Wind and moving water cause erosion. The Grand Canyon is a good example.
7. A country I am interested in is ______________, because __________________.
8. I don’t enjoy _________________, because ______________________________.
9. I’m afraid of _________________, because ______________________________.
10. My favorite day of the week is ____________, because_____________________.

That is all for this week! Let’s try to make this semester even better than the last!

Weekly Newsletter #22

Friday, August 31st, 2007

Dear Parents,

Things are going smoothly in class 3-1, and we had a very interesting week while learning many new things. We now have a pet praying mantis in class, and we even measured everyone to figure out the “average” height for all students in class. Before I update you on these things, however, I would like to introduce more about the EOP rules (English Only Policy). So far, it has proven effective. With the help of Mrs. Choi, students are beginning to respect my demands for less talking and more listening. The rules for the system are as follows:

1-Student is told to be quiet.

2-If student continues to talk, his/her name is written on the board in the “Warning” box.

3-If student continues not to listen, they are taken out into the hallway and spoken to, and his/her name is moved to the “EOP Violation” box.

4-Once three students names are in the box, they are taken to the office to speak with Mrs. Choi and principals, and a small punishment (Special Training) is decided on.

5-After three EOP violations, parents will be contacted and asked to visit the school

As well, I would like to remind that each student should have at least one ClearFile folder for loose papers that I give to them.

Now, I will update you as to what we covered in class.

Reading

We are finished with the Harcourt book, and from now on I will be using copied books from the library. These books are much more interesting, and more appropriate for our level of study. This week, we read a book from the famous “Curious George” series. We read “Curious George Flies a Kite.” I gave the students a homework assignment where they have to answer questions about the story. Please make sure students respect these books, and do not write in them or fold the pages. Students can take them home over the weekend, but they must be back on Monday.

English with Mr. Bean

This is a new activity I am beginning, which is similar to the Weekly Pop-Song we had last semester (we will continue to learn songs as well). I have included this on the class website for this week. Students watch an animated Mr. Bean cartoon which is 10 minutes long. They are then given a question sheet where they must fill in the blanks while watching Mr. Bean. We will do this activity every Monday or Tuesday. All of these episodes are available on the YouTube website.

Science

We are now using the Earth Sciences Unit B book, and learning about weather and forces of nature (tornados, volcanoes, hurricanes etc).

Megaflash

We are on Unit 7, page 110. We are focusing on prepositions, and opposites. A test will be scheduled soon. I have noticed that students are finally beginning to understand verb-tenses more effectively. Learning how to use past-tense is the most important thing third graders should master at this level. If I can see evidence of this in their journals, I am happy.

Math

Math is not something I plan to do continually, and I just wanted to spend a week on it to ensure students know the English terms for simple math equations. They now know them, so I will not continue with it.

Now here is the spelling list for next week. Many deal with Science and the “water cycle.” Others deal with “homonyms” – words that sound the same or have same spellings but have different meanings. Example: Which witch is which? Where should I wear my hat? They’re over there with their friends. As these are simple words, students will have to use them in a sentence for the test and know which spelling to use.

1. curious

2. exchange

3. helicopter

4. vapor

5. evaporate

6. condense

7. water cycle

8. cause

9. camouflage

10. precipitation

11. homonym

12. which

13. witch

14. their

15. there

16. they’re

17. wear

18. where

19. praying mantis

20. enjoyable

Now here is this week’s Daily English:

1. Curiosity killed the cat!

2. Which witch is which?

3. Heat causes water to evaporate and become water vapor.

4. Cool air causes water vapor to condense, and turn back into water.

5. Water moves up to the sky and down to the earth in a water cycle.

6. My favorite season is _______________, because I like _____________ and __________ weather.

7. The praying mantis is a predator and a carnivore. It is very good at camouflage.

8. I promise to listen in class and stop talking when my teacher is teaching, because I don’t want an EOP Violation.

9. I think it would be funny if Mr. Bean (think of something funny Mr. Bean could do).

Ex: I think it would be funny if Mr. Bean became my new teacher at KISQ.

10. They’re (doing something) over there (use a preposition and a place) with their (use a noun of something they own).

Ex: They’re playing soccer over there next to the mountain with their ball.

Dear Parents,

The new semester has begun, and I hope everyone had a relaxing summer vacation and has saved up some energy for the next few months. There have been some changes made to our schedule, and things will be more structured. Classes are now 45 minutes long, and a bell system has been installed to manage time more efficiently. Within the next two weeks, more details will be added as we plan our next books. We are nearly finished with some of them at this point.

We have begun a new sticker chart, and this will continue to encourage good behavior, diligent study, and an active English diary. I have noticed some excellent improvements with the students writing and penmanship. Students, tutors, and parents: keep up the good work! I’m really happy and surprised with how well class 3-1 learns and improves.

I also hope to make this next semester more interactive, as I want to build up the students free-speaking skills. Everyday, I will ask the students a new “Question of the Day” to start the morning, and they can answer freely and listen to what other students have to say. For example, I might ask: “If you had to live in any country in the world besides Korea or China, where would you live? Why?”

Over the summer, I taught in Korea at the Korean Minjok Leadership Academy in Gangwondo. This school has a very strict policy towards student discipline. Students are not allowed to speak Korean, as they follow an EOP - “English Only Policy.” I really enjoyed how the students never made noise in class, and always paid attention to what I was saying. Now that I am back at KISQ, I will expect similar respect from the students in class 3-1. In order for the class to have maximum effectiveness, I am going to be very strict about listening from now on. If students do not listen, and interrupt and make noise, they will be punished. So, I hope that you, the parents, can encourage your children to pay attention. Please remind them that you are aware of the new rules, and that there will be punishment. I also want to encourage students to speak as much English in class as possible, and not just to me, but between themselves. If I hear them speaking in English with each other during break-time, similar to an EOP policy, stickers will be awarded.

Here is next week’s spelling list. I plan to spend a few lessons teaching “Math English” next week. I hope students are familiar with their times tables.

One of the words for this week’s vocabulary is “souvenir.” For Show and Tell this week, I would like each student to bring a souvenir from another country.

1. average

2. equals

3. divided

4. subtracted

5. added

6. total

7. percent

8. decimal

9. multiplication

12. calculator

13. centimeter

14. visited

15. souvenir

16. activities

Daily English for this week will focus on discussing summer vacation in the past tense using good adjectives.

1. I had a _______________ summer vacation. I ____________________________ and ___________________________. (Tell me about two interesting things you did)

2. The weather is so hot and humid. I feel sweaty and sticky!

3. How tall are you? I’m ____ centimeters.

4. What is the average height for all the students in class 3-1? I predict it will be _____ centimeters.

5. I really (adjective) studying mathematics.

6. When I visited ______________, I bought a souvenir. It’s a (describe the souvenir).

Example: When I visited Japan, I bought a souvenir. It’s a small geisha doll.

7. Seven multiplied by nine equals fifty-four.

8. If you see brackets in a math question, answer them first.

9. The four oceans cover seventy-one percent (71%) of the earth’s surface.

10. I hope I can (what is your goal) this semester.

Example: I hope I can improve my spelling this semester.

Now that the new semester has begun, I will continue to use the website at

www.3-1kisq.blogspot.com to communicate with parents and students. I have many photos to upload from last semester. The Chinese government continues to block this website, but if you use http://www.unblockall.net/ or http://www.dontfilter.us/ you can easily see the website.

That is all for this week! Let’s try to make this semester even better than the last!

Weekly Newsletter #15

Friday, June 15th, 2007

Dear Parents,

Now that we are in the final weeks of June, it is time to prepare for Final Exams. The students will have to complete four exams: Spelling/Vocabulary, Writing/Grammar, Reading/Comprehension, and Science.

These exams will focus mainly on the materials we have learned since the mid-term exams, but will include some items from the beginning of the year as well. I will give the students study sheets at the beginning of next week.

This week has been busy, and the students learned a lot of new material. I am happy with their interest level. Geography is interesting to them, as are the studies about Egypt.

Today’s good news is that class 3-1 did very well in the KISQ IED Spelling Bee. 12 students competed from grades 3 and 4, and the wonderful news is that our three girls, Jenny, Vicky, and Sally, did very well. Jenny was the champion! Congratulations to Jenny! Our class has very good spellers. ^ ^

As many parents already know, our class has recently experienced some social problems. Mrs. Choi and I have always made a consistent effort to fix these problems, and we continue to keep a careful eye on how the students interact and treat each other. We try to encourage all students to maintain Christian attitudes, and to examine their behavior. Some days in our class are not so good, but very few are bad. Most days are happy, and this week ended on a positive note. Things are improving. For next week’s Daily English, I want to introduce some positive messages, and this one is my favorites:

“Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you.”

I hope we all can keep this message in mind, as it is important to treat others how we would like to be treated. Respect, sympathy, and individual leadership are things I want the students to try and achieve.

Next Friday there will be no school due to the KISQ Anniversary, so I hope students use this time to study at home for the exams.

Reading/Comprehension

We read the fiction story “From Seed to Plant” which was very similar to what we studied about plants in science. However, it is a bit difficult to read. We are nearly finished our reading book, and I hope to find a new one to order for next semester. For the Reading/Comprhension exam, I will be using two stories: “Hedgehog Bakes a Cake” and “Lemonade for Sale.” Students can begin to review these stories.

Oral/Vocabulary

This week we didn’t study a pop song, and instead focused on geography and Egypt. The students continue to score very high in Weekly Spelling and Daily English.

Writing/Grammar

We had a simple Megaflash “quiz” rather than an official test this week. We studied prepositions and compound words. I will combine these with the final exam.

Geogaphy/History

Students should now know all of the oceans and continents in the world, and be able to spell and label a map. I will test them on this next week. We will continue to learn more facts about Egypt. Since these are not in a book but in handouts that I make, they will always be uploaded to the website. If you are having problems looking at the website, use www.unblockall.net first.

Weekly Newsletter #14

Friday, June 8th, 2007

Dear Parents,

With the camp finished, and the final month of June underway, I am hoping to make the remaining weeks before vacation good ones. I think the camp was a success, and I want to thank all the mothers who contributed their time and effort to our delicious dinner. Mrs. Choi and I feel blessed to have such a good PTA. As well, our performance at the talent show was very well received by students and teachers who watched. Good job students!

This week was busy. We had our science test, and I was very impressed with the high scores. I think the students enjoyed studying animals, and learned the information well.

Since we are basically finished the science book, I have chosen to use the time for a mix of Social Studies, Geography, and History instead. I allowed the students to vote on what subject interested them, and they decided to study Egypt and the ancient pyramids. This topic will supplement our regular studies until vacation.

Next week, on Friday the 15th, the IED will hold a “Spelling Bee.” This is a competition where students are given words to spell orally, and they must avoid elimination by spelling the words correctly. Based on weekly spellings scores, I chose Vicky, Sally, and Jenny to represent class 3-1.

The weeks ahead are going to be very busy, and Final Exams are coming up. Students should begin to review with their tutors.

Again, the Chinese government is blocking access to blog websites, and you might not be able to see our class website without a proxy server. If you have problems, go to:

www.bypassproxy.net and then type in the class website address at:

www.3-1kisq.blogspot.com

I have given students many handout papers lately, and notice some students are not putting them in their Clear-File folders. I will be giving out many handouts in the final month (many regarding the study of Egypt), so please make sure your children are staying organized and keeping their papers in order.

Reading/Comprehension

We read the fiction story “Lemonade for Sale,” which was about starting a small business and marketing. The story dealt with a “bar graph,” so I had students make their own graphs to survey other students with a question of their choice.

Oral/Vocabulary

The pop song for this week was “Turn! Turn! Turn!” by The Byrds. I will post a video on the website. This week we did not have Daily English due to the Science test and some schedule problems.

Writing/Grammar

The students rewrote their Megaflash test last week, and improved a great deal. We are quickly progressing through this book, and will have another test next week for Unit 5. It will not be as difficult as the last one.

Science

The students have studied plants and animals, and the book is finished. Rather than continue to study science as our elective English subject, I am going to change to a mix of Geography, Social Studies, and History through studying Egypt. I will use resources from the internet.

Here are the words for Weekly Spelling next week. These focus on geography and Egypt.

Spelling List

1. equator

2. continent

3. dynasty

4. longitude

5. latitude

6. mummy

13. Nile River

14. South America

15. Antarctica

16. Europe

17. Asia

18. Australia

19. Pacific Ocean

20. Atlantic Ocean

This weeks Daily English focuses on our camp, and Egypt:

1. The best thing about camp was __________________________.

2. At camp, I went to sleep at (time) and woke up at (time). I had a (adjective) sleep.

3. My favorite game at camp was _________________.

4. At the beach, I _________________________.

Did you like the websites we saw in class? You can find them at StumbleUpon.com

Dear Students,

Do you know what "random" means? When we spin a dice, it lands on a random number. Sometimes "random" things are interesting, and can be an amazing suprise.

Similar to Google, StumbleUpon.com is a new toolbar you can download. It only takes you to popular websites that many other people like. Nothing boring is allowed! You can learn many interesting things with this, and you can choose the kinds of websites it will take you to.

Just push the "Stumble!" button.

Download the program here:

www.stumbleupon.com

You will have to make a free account with a password.

Good luck! Here are some of the websites we saw in class:

Talking Monkeys!
Where's Waldo??
Make your own snowflake!
This rabbit thinks your mouse is his prey!
Do you want to be an artist?
Jump rope!
Don't try this at home...
What's your favorite color?

Weekly Newsletter #13

Friday, May 25th, 2007

Dear Parents,

This week has been very busy, as we prepare for next week’s “Camp.” The camp will take place all day on Thursday, August 31st, and will conclude by 10:30 the following day. Children are free to go home at that time. Students and teachers are required to stay overnight at the school, and a more complete agenda and list of items to bring will be sent home with the students on Monday. In any case, the camp promises to be a fun-filled and active event.

On Thursday, we attended the movie “Spiderman 3.” The students were well behaved and they seemed to enjoy the film.

Reading/Comprehension

We read the fiction story “Hedgehog Bakes a Cake,” which was about cooking. The vocabulary compliments last week’s cooking competition.

Oral/Vocabulary

The pop song for this week was “Lucky” by Britney Spears. Next week, we will study some poems. Daily English and Spelling have improved since Parent/Teacher interviews. I am happy with this progress.

This week’s Daily English and Weekly Spelling, included in the last newsletter, will be tested on Monday. Next week, because of the camp, there will be no Daily English, and only a simple review spelling test that will use words from past weeks.

Writing/Grammar

We had our Megaflash Test for units 3 & 4 last week, but due to some lower scores than I anticipated (the class average was 61%), we had a retest today. I am satisfied with the results and will return the tests next week. I think it is good for students to learn from the testing process, as they learn from their previous mistakes.

Miss O’s Megaflash students will be given a test on units 3 and 4 on Monday. This will also include definitions of different grammar points. Please check the pages for words written in blue such as adjective, pronoun, subject, predicate, etc.

Science

I will prepare a study sheet and try to find time to have a test next week before the camp. I will inform the students next week. At this point, I don’t feel the students are prepared to write the test due to lack of time with school events.

Here are the review words for Weekly Spelling next week.

Spelling List

1. reason

2. apostrophe

3. cafeteria

4. peaceful

5. organized

6. brought

7. sequence

8. melodies

9. tough

10. polite

11. pronoun

12. classify

13. certificate

14. famous

15. electronic

16. scientist

17. quietly

18. future

19. situation

20. simple

Have a great weekend everyone!

Creepy Pizza

by Neal Levin

________________________________________
I’d like a pizza topped with cheese
then sprinkled with some gnats and fleas,
some centipedes and slimy slugs,
and other creepy, crawly bugs.
I want to add some fingernails
and oyster ooze and crunchy snails
and chicken bones and spoiled meat
and smelly socks from dirty feet.
I want it topped with lots of mold
and gooey boogers (not too old),
a lot of snot, a little spit,
and guts with grimy, grainy grit.
I want the most disgusting crust
with spider webs and day-old dust
and dirt and mud and blood and gore
delivered to my sister’s door.
