Daniel and his family try the "Mentos+Diet Cola=Explosion" Experiment
But...........it didn't work! Again!
We tried it in class. Lucy tried it. And now Daniel tried it. None of the experiments worked like they do on the Youtube videos we saw. Why? Why doesn't it work? What are we doing wrong????
If anyone else can do this experiment, and get a real explosion, I will give you 5 stickers. I think it is possible, but the cola must be 2 liters. Maybe it must be cold. Maybe the Mentos have to be mint. Maybe they have to be put inside with a special tube.
If at first you don't succeed.....try again! Practice makes perfect.: )

Ma-na-ma-nah!
Dear students,
Your homework today is to think about "noise in the classroom." I really really really am having a difficult time teaching you English when I can't hear myself speak. My throat is very sore today from trying to keep you all paying attention.
IF class 3-1 does not improve behavior in class, you will not be able to learn English well. You will be wasting time that should be used to learn English.
Please promise to try and be better students!
Mr. Garrioch

Lucy and her family try the "Mentos+Cola=Explosion!" experiment!
Unfortunately, the experiment wasn't successful for Lucy and her family either. Why won't it work like in the other videos????? I think it will only work with a big bottle of Cola Light and enough real Mint Mentos. At least 4 have to be put into the bottle through a tube. If anyone wants to try again and succeeds, you will get 5 stickers if you make a video like Lucy. Good work Lucy~^^

Weekly Newsletter #8

Friday, April 20th, 2007
Dear Parents,
This has been a busy week, but next week will be even busier leading up to the May holiday. As you know, from March 30th to April 4th is the holiday time, so there will be no school. I hope you enjoy your vacation with your family wherever it takes you. I’m sure the students will need a rest from all the studying they are doing.
Next week, on Tuesday, April 24th, the students will have their monthly field-trip. Our class will having a picnic at Zhongshan Park for most of the day from 9:00 to 2:50 pm. We will also have a chance to visit the Qingdao Zoo. Lunch will be supplied. Students should dress well for the weather, and wear good shoes for playing games.
The following day, on April 25th, we will have our first mid-term exam. It will be Spelling/Vocabulary. Combined with grammar and writing, this will include many items from our Daily English and Spelling Lists. I recently gave students a study sheet, which is also available for viewing on the website. The following day, on Thursday, April 26th, we will have two more tests. The first will be Grammar/Writing (mostly from Megaflash units 1, 2, and 3), and the second will be the Reading/Comprehension (mostly from two storied from Harcourt: “Days with Frog and Toad” and “Wilson Sat Alone”). Students can take the reading book home with them in order to study these stories.
I have recently found out that the Chinese government is no longer blocking websites on www.blogspot.com, so there is no longer any problem viewing the class website. You can go directly to www.3-1kisq.blogspot.com without any problems. Today I recorded some questions from Daily English time, and you will be able to see some very cute videos of the students when I upload them.
Now I will review what we did this week, and what we hope to do next week.
Reading/Comprehension
We reviewed the stories “Wilson Sat Alone” and “Days with Frog and Toad.” The students should have completed up to page 26 in the workbook. In the future, we will be using books that Mr. Lyle Smith has kindly provided for the IED department.
Oral/Vocabulary
Due to scores not being as high on Mondays as Fridays, I have made the Spelling and Daily English tests on Friday again. I’m very proud of the effort the students put into these difficult tests, and I want them to know they should be proud of their achievements.
I look forward to good results on the challenging mid-term. Next week there will be no Daily English or Spelling due to the mid-terms. This week’s pop song was “Apples and Bananas” by Raffi. This song teaches us about AEIOU vowels and how they can changes words.
Writing/Grammar
I’m very happy with the English journals lately. I’m glad parents are encouraging good effort. Please make another notebook for students to rewrite previous pages in. It can be called the “Rewrite Journal.” Students will get one more sticker when they rewrite pages from earlier in the week. I will no longer mark pages with purple stars, and instead let the students take the initiative to do this on their own. Some students have really improved their writing and no longer make verb mistakes as often. Other students still write in the present-tense when they write about yesterday. Please try to stop!: )
Science
I want to make science projects as I showed in the picture from last week’s newsletter. However, I am having problems finding boxes to cut in half. I would like each student to have a box that is the same size. If any parents know where to get boxes that are in good condition and 2’-3’ feet high and wide, please let me know. I considered having students bring in boxes, but this will not work well if every student has a box that is different.
The purpose of this project is to learn research and presentation skills. Kids will chose any three animals from and of the six animal groups (insect, mammal, fish, amphibian, reptile, bird) and learn about them independently.
I would also like to congratulate Cindy for receiving the IED Science Award. She was the best behaved and most enthusiastic student on that day, and she had some good observations about why the experiment failed. I would also like to thank Lucy and her family for trying the experiment at home and giving me a video of it. I will put it on the website. Unfortunately, they didn’t have good luck with the experiment either. If anyone wants to try again, I will still award 5 stickers, but only if it works!: )
Have a good weekend, and study hard for next week’s tests~!

Knowledge is power!

Weekly Newsletter #7

Friday, April 13th, 2007
Dear Parents,
Friday the 13th is a very unlucky day in western culture. Today I taught the students about why it is unlucky. Hopefully it turned out to be lucky.^ ^
Thank you for attending the Open House on Wednesday. I hope you liked our classroom and are satisfied with the progress made. I look forward to making class 3-1 better with your cooperation. Thank you to the PTA for giving us plants and the curtains. The classroom is looking better every week.
Mid-term Tests are coming up, and I would like to have them on April 25th. These tests will try and encompass everything we have learned up until this point.
Science Day Awards will be given this Monday in the auditorium. Based on enthusiasm, and effort put into the experiment, one student from every class will be chosen. Unfortunately, our “Mentos+Cola=Explosion” experiment did not work very well. I asked every student to write a reason why they think the experiment failed, and the students had some good observations. If any parents and students would like to try the Mentos+Cola=Explosion experiment at home, and make a video of the experiment, I would be happy to put it on the website and award 5 stickers!
Now I will review what we did this week, and what we hope to do next week.
Reading/Comprehension
We read the story “The Enormous Turnip” this week in the Harcourt reading book. The students should have completed up to page 21 in the workbook.
Oral/Vocabulary
Every month, I want to award the student who had the highest scores in both the Weekly Spelling and Daily English. This month, Vicky had the best scores. In 5 spelling tests, she only spelled 4 out of 100 word incorrectly, and her Daily English was perfect for 5 weeks in a row. Great job Vicky!
Students have asked me to change the test days from Friday to Monday so they have more time to prepare. The next test is therefore on Moday.
This week’s pop song was “Supercifragilisticexpialidocious” by Mary Poppins. It is available for viewing on the website.
Writing/Grammar
Most students did a good job of correcting the pages in their journals marked with a purple star. Some students are doing there corrections in a different notebook which is a good idea. Please try to make your journals nice and tidy and clean. The best journal for every month will get a reward. This month, Daniel had the best journal. He wrote in it a lot and made the corrections. Good job Daniel!
The Megaflash class has been going well. We made our Verb Books this week. Each student should have 40 pages with 39 verbs in their book. For each verb, they have to write two sentences: one in the past-tense and one in the present-tense. I gave each student a verb sheet to help them with the sentences. This book is now homework and should be finished by Monday. I will give each student a mark for how nice it looks.
For the students in Miss O’s class, they have also been learning verbs, and should review pages 41 to 48.
Science
We had our re-write test on Friday for plants. Hopefully the scores improved. We also began Unit 2 which is about animals. We watched some videos about “predators.”
Soon, I want to begin a program where every student begins a project studying an animal. Gradually, they will research information about this animal and add it to their poster. This will involve a lot of cutting and gluing and looking for pictures.

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!!! What does it mean?: )
If this video is slow, go here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3zAbQ0aMK8
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Guess what students! I gave you the wrong spelling of this word! Can you find the difference? I'm really sorry I told you the wrong spelling. Because I told you the wrong spelling, we have to have this word again in our Weekly Spelling List. I'm really really really sorry.;)
Now....what does supercalifragilisticexpialidocious mean? When I "Googled" it, this is what I found:
This word came from the movie "Mary Poppins." It was made in 1964. It was used in a song when Mary Poppins talks to some news reporters who want to ask her questions about a horse race. There are too many reporters and they are bothering her, so she uses this word and says it is magical. If you are in a bad mood and want to feel happy, just say it! Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! If you feel confused, or are scared, or are really frustrated, just say it! Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! If something is really amazing, fantastic, and wonderful....it is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! It has many meanings.
Because the movie "Mary Poppins" was so popular, the word became an adjective used by both children and adults. It is still popular many years later, mostly because of the song. Here are the lyrics to that song. Sing it fast!
Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay
Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Even though the sound of it Is something quite atrocious
If you say it loud enough
You'll always sound precocious
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay
Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay
Because I was afraid to speak when I was just a lad
My father gave me nose a tweak And told me I was bad
But then one day I learned a word That saved me aching nose
The biggest word I ever heard And this is how it goes:
Oh, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Even though the sound of it
Is something quite atrocious
If you say it loud enough
You'll always sound precocious
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay
Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay
So when the cat has got your tongue
There's no need for dismay
Just summon up this word And then you've got a lot to say
But better use it carefully Or it may change your life
One night I said it to me girl
And now me girl's my wife!
She's supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Weekly Newsletter #6

Friday, April 6th, 2007
Dear Parents,
Now that April is underway, Open House Day is coming up on Wednesday, April 11th, from 1:20-2:00 pm. You will be able to meet with me for the first 10 minutes in the homeroom, followed by a 10 minute meeting with Mrs. Choi, and then 10 minutes to meet with the Writing/Grammar class teacher, which will be either myself or Mrs. Onarecker from class 3-2. A time to ask questions will conclude the session. All teachers look forward to meeting with you.
While the IED Elementary department does not have midterm tests, I will be giving tests designed to summarize what the students have learned thus far. You can expect a progress report coming home soon. I hope your children have been taking home the tests to show what they have been accomplishing. These tests should be kept in their Clear File folder.
In other news, all teachers in our department are attempting to come up with an “IED Code of Conduct” standard to encourage respect, discipline, and social skills for the students. When it is complete, I will send it home in the newsletter.
Our class would also like to thank the PTA for donating the beautiful plants to our classroom, and thank you also to Hannah’s mother and Bryan’s mother for organizing last week’s enjoyable birthday party. Unfortunately, there are no birthdays for the month of April.
As well, if parents would like to consult with Mrs.Choi and I, we both are available from 1:00 to 1:40 pm on Mondays.
Now I will review what we did this week, and what we hope to do next week.
Reading/Comprehension
We read the story “Wilson Sat Alone” this week in the Harcourt reading book. The students should have completed up to page 16 in the workbook.
Oral/Vocabulary
I am trying to make the Weekly Spelling and Daily English as useful and comprehensive as possible. Therefore, I am taking words and phrases from our study material when possible. We are also making a “Word Wall” in our classroom. Every word from our spelling list will go on this wall at the end of the month. This is a good way to keep these words in constant use.
Most of the students are doing very will with the Weekly Spelling and Daily English, but some students, who have not been studying English as long, seem to have problems. If you feel your child would benefit from an easier spelling list and easier English phrases to memorize, please let me know, or have your child ask me for an easier list.
This week’s pop song was “Yesterday Once More” by The Carpenters. It is available for viewing on the website.
I would also like to congratulate Min and Sally for doing a great job in the CCTV Speech Contest. Both students will go on to compete in the next round coming up on April 22nd. Good luck to Min and Sally!
Writing/Grammar
For homework, I would like to have each student rewrite three pages from their journal by the end of next week. I will put a purple star on the pages I think they should rewrite. This is so they can notice the differences in corrected grammar.
Miss Onarecker and I have begun to teach the leveled Writing/Grammar classes, and things are going well. We have now completed Unit 2 in the Megaflash book, and will begin Unit 3 next week. There will be a Unit 2 test on Tuesday.
Science
Today we had our Science Day, and the experiment I chose to do was mixing Mentos Mint Candy with Diet Cola. When these are mixed, a “chemical reaction” occurs as the Mentos are a “catalyst” for the carbon in the cola. If you wish to see this experiment, you can see it on the internet at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKoB0MHVBvM
We also had our first Science test on Thursday. The average score was 61%, and two students, Tom and Jenny, scored 100%. As most students did not do very well, I will make another test next week that will be easier. I designed the test to expose them to typical western-style science test questions, such as “True and False,” “Choose the best answer,” and labeling of a diagram. These kinds of tests require careful reading rather than a lot of writing or memorization, and this is a skill I want to encourage.
Thursday, 5 April 2007
Mint Mentos + Diet Cola = EXPLOSION!!!!!!
We are going to try to do this in class tomorrow if I can find Mint Mentos. I hope it works! I want you to think about these words: Catalyst, Explosion, Carbon, Chemical Reaction, Pressure

Weekly Newsletter #5
Friday, March 30th, 2007
Dear Parents,
This has been a very busy week. On Tuesday we had our Megaflash test, on Thursday we had our field-trip, and on Friday we had our Birthday Party Day. Please take a look at the website to see pictures. Next week will also be very busy, and there will be some changes to our curriculum.
Due to varying levels English ability in both grade three classes, the school has decided it is best to mix the grade three classes for one period a day for the Writing/Grammar class. Some students need to focus on basic phonics and spelling, and will therefore be studying with Miss Onarecker from class 3-2. The other students who have been studying English longer will study with me. This will help our IED program improve.
I am very happy with class 3-1, and have definitely seen their English improve since the year began. However, I have also noticed that discipline and respect among students has, at times, been lacking. Class 3-1 has a reputation in this school as being very clever and energetic. However, I have also heard other teachers, both Korean and Chinese, say that the students are too noisy, pushy, and competitive. I often have problems taking students to snack-time and the cafeteria. The boys, especially, are pushing and shoving and sometimes hitting other students. Together with Mrs. Choi, I hope to fix these problems and introduce consequences for rude behavior, not listening in class, and being slow to open books. Please help by encouraging good behavior.
Now I will review what we did this week, and what we hope to do next week:
Reading/Comprehension
We read the stories “Days With Frog and Toad” and the poem “Sometimes” in the Harcourt reading book. The students should have completed up to page 10 in the workbook. Students are no longer sharing the reading book, as the late order has come in and every third grade student now has their own book. That said, students are not allowed to write in the reading books but are allowed to take them home.
Oral/Vocabulary
We continue to work with the vocabulary I introduced through studying computer related entertainment such as video games. While this vocabulary is not easy, the students know how it is used and it has taught them how to study vocabulary. The students really seem to enjoy the pop song activity, and this week we learned to sing “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” by The Tokens. The videos and lyrics for these songs are on the website.
Writing/Grammar
I would like to see more students correcting the mistakes they made in previous English journal pages. If they don’t rewrite, they won’t learn to stop making the same errors. These errors are usually with verb tense. I am also considering making the English journal mandatory, as some students are not handing it in consistently.
We had the Megaflash 3 Test on Tuesday and every student did well. We are midway through unit two, and students are learning to write numbers and contractions.
Science
The school is having a Science Day next Friday, and we will conduct an in-class experiment. I am not sure what this will be yet, but, in each class, one student will be awarded as the best participant based on how well they listened and learned.
Spelling List
Here is next week’s Spelling List. These words are taken from the pop song, the science book, Harcourt’s workbook, Megaflash etc. I postponed last week’s test until Monday because this week was very busy.

Our Field Trip to the T.V. Tower

First, we all got on the school bus. Some students were very shy. Who are these two girls? Can you guess?

Some students were not shy at all.
Wow! Look at these big smiles! They look excited to reach the T.V. Tower.
When we arrived, we got off the bus and walked up the hill towards the tower.
Suddenly we saw the very tall tower, going up into the clouds. We wondered if we would be able to see Qingdao through the fog.
We waited in line to ride the elevator. The hall had many old pictures of Qingdao before it became modern.
We could also see many posters for the 2008 summer Olympics in Beijing.
Unfortunately, we couldn't see very much from the top of the tower. It was too foggy. But we still had a good time.
Where should we go for our next field trip? Egypt? Disney World? Maybe even the moon!
