Friday, March 9th, 2007 Dear Parents,
The first full week of school is finished, and I really enjoyed getting to know the students. They are very lively, intelligent, and ready to learn. As a group, the students have similar abilities, and I am very pleased to see the students help each other and cooperate.
I have created a website for parents and students to use in order to keep track of what is going on in our classroom. I will update it weekly, with both the “Daily English” and the spelling test vocabulary list. I will also include other news, events, and curriculum information, complete with pictures and video. The address for this site is:
www.3-1kisq.blogspot.com
This website will be more informative than the weekly newsletter, and I will also be posting the weekly newsletter on the site in case students lose the papers on the way home.
Last week, I asked the children what topic they wanted to study, and we brainstormed many possible topics. They finally chose “video games” as the most interesting. I will therefore be using this topic from time to time with relation to vocabulary, reading, and writing. If students have a true interest in the topic they study, I believe they will remember what they learned more easily.
Here is some information on what was covered this week:
Reading Comprehension: We are using the red “Trophies” book as our reading book. We read the first story about a chameleon. The school has ordered workbook which will arrive soon. Until then, I will give the students photocopies.
Oral Vocabulary: We are using “Everyday Spelling” as our book, but I feel this book is not challenging enough and a bit boring. So I often use my own materials which the students enjoy. The focus for this week was on the different parts of sentences: proper nouns, common nouns, verbs, and adjectives. I also encourage students to read their work out loud to the class. We did this with the “What Are Friends For” handout where students make their own story.
Science: We are using a book called “Earth Sciences,” and the first unit is about living and non-living things. Plants are part of this unit, so I am hoping to get some plants for the classroom. If any parents would like to donate a small plant, it would be appreciated.
Writing Grammar: We are using the blue “Megaflash 3” book. It is a very good book that the students understand and enjoy using. I will use this often for homework. This week we did the first 5 pages dealing with nouns and proper nouns.
English Diary
I also began an “English Diary” program which will improve the students writing. I expect them to give me their diaries twice a week: on Thursday and Monday. On Thursday, I want them to write about the things they liked and disliked at school, and about anything else that interests them. On Monday, I want to know about their weekend. Please supply the students with a notebook that is used only for the English diary. The notebook should be large enough for students to rewrite and correct their mistakes on the same page. This is A4 size.
Please limit the amount of help you give your children with the diary. It is ok to coach them, but I want them to make mistakes so that I can correct the mistakes and show them how to write proper grammar. Students should write at least 5 sentences. The most common error is with verb usage. Students have trouble using “past-tense” verbs when they write about something that has already happened. For example, “I eat pizza on Sunday” should be “I ate pizza on Sunday.”
Super Students Sticker Chart
I want to provide students with an incentive to do well in class. Effort and diligent study will be rewarded, as well as good behavior, respecting the classroom, being polite, and being kind to classmates. Students can use their stickers to get prizes. Below is the reward system:
8 Stickers = 1 ice cream
15 Stickers = 1 small toy
20 Stickers = stationary (pencil, pen, eraser etc.)
30 Stickers = 1 medium toy
50 Stickers = 1 large toy
Birthdays
If your child is having a birthday, please contact either myself or Mrs. Choi so we can arrange a small party.
Show and Tell
Starting next week, we will begin a “Show and Tell” program on Wednesdays where students can bring in an interesting object and show it to the classroom. This can be a toy, a family heirloom, an interesting knick-knack, or even a book they really like. It can be anything as long as they can “show and tell” the class something interesting. Only 5 students per week will present to the class, and we will decide who will do so when on Monday, and I will post a schedule on the class website.
Tests Friday will be the test day for spelling, and Daily English. I don’t want my tests to be too easy or too hard, and this week’s test will be a measure to see if I need to make things harder or more easier. Since we are the high-level grade three class, and each student is very eager and capable of learning, I intend to challenge them with interesting curriculum.
Thanks for your attention, and please view the class website for updates, and next week’s spelling list.
Regards,
Mr. Garrioch
