Weekly Newsletter #4

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

Dear Parents,

Thank you for attending the Parent Teacher meeting on Wednesday. It was nice to meet with some of you, and discuss both your children and the curriculum. If you ever have concerns, feel free to email or contact me by telephone.

I would also like to apologize for some problems with the class website. Unfortunately, this is due to the Chinese government putting restrictions on blog websites. While I am able to update the site, the site is unavailable for viewing within China. Because of this problem, I plan to move the site. For now, however, you can view the website through a “proxy” server.

First of all, go to: www.bypassproxy.net or www.proxify.com

These sites allow us to bypass the Chinese government’s restrictions. When you see the URL window, simply type in: www.3-1kisq.blogspot.com and you will be able to see the website. It might be very slow, but it will work.

Now I will review what we did this week, and what we hope to do next week:

Reading/Comprehension

We read the stories “Henry and Mudge” and “Get Up and Go” in the Harcourt reading book. This week, the workbooks that accompany these books also arrived, and I will be using them most often for homework. Students should have completed the first 6 pages.

Oral/Vocabulary

I hope to keep past vocabulary and Daily English sentences in constant use so that they stay fresh in the student’s minds. I have made some crossword puzzles as handouts that will hopefully help the students remember everything they have learned. It appears that test scores for both Daily English and the Weekly Spelling continue to be very high, so I don’t think the material is too difficult for the majority of students.

For oral proficiency, I plan to teach the students to sing a new pop song every week. This week we learned to sing “My Love” by Westlife. This activity is good for listening, vocabulary, and pronunciation. And of course singing~^^ I will also put links to the songs on the class website.

Writing/Grammar

Some students are very enthusiastic about the English diary, while other students are not as interested. Please encourage and help your children with it, but try to let them write as much as possible without help from parents. If you feel your child needs more homework, have them rewrite and correct the mistakes in previous days. The students should be aware of the mistakes they make and learn how to correct them. This is the main purpose of keeping an English journal.

On Monday, I gave the students a sample of how to write a good journal. You can use this as a reference, and I will post this on the website in case students have lost the handout (students should have a Clear File folder to keep handouts in).

We have finished Unit 1 in the Megaflash 3 textbook. There will be a test on Tuesday covering proper/common nouns, plurals, is/are and some spelling of days and months. Please help students study.

We are also now studying penmanship/written script. This is meant to be done with a ballpoint pen instead of a pencil, so please make sure your child has a pen.

Science

We continue to study plants, and students now know the parts of a plant. Now that the classroom is now equipped with TV to computer with internet, I will be able to better illustrate how plants grow. We still plan to have each student grow a plant.

Birthday Parties

Mrs. Choi and I have decided that the last period in the afternoon on the last Friday of every month will be the class-wide “Birthday Party Day.” This month, Hannah (3/3) and Bryan (3/27) have birthdays. We will celebrate with snacks and cake donated by parents. Please also provide a small gift with a value no higher than 10 RMB. Erasers, stickers, small toys, and stationary are good gifts. We will have the party for Hannah and Bryan on March 30th at 2:30 pm.

Field-Trip

On March 29th, from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm, the students in grade three will go on a field-trip to the Qingdao T.V. Tower and park. Students do not need to prepare anything, as lunch will be eaten at school as usual. A camera and suitable clothing for hiking are the only things to consider.

Here is next week’s Spelling List. These words are taken from the pop song, the science book, Harcourt’s workbook, Megaflash etc.

Weekly Newsletter #3

Friday, March 16th, 2007

Dear Parents,

The third week of the new semester is complete, and things are coming together nicely. Our classroom looks more beautiful by the day, and I have now begun to supplement our regular English studies with our theme of “video games.” I enjoy creating an English speaking environment where students can brainstorm, and participate in class discussions.

The PTA meeting will be held next week, I hope all parents can participate in the meeting.(다음 주에는 학부모회의가 있습니다. 바쁘시더라도 참석해 주시길 바랍니다.)

1. Time : March. 21. 2007. (Wednesday) 13:00
2. Place : Auditorium (3rd floor)-
강당
3. Agenda:(
내용)
1) Introduce all teachers in Elementary IED(
담임소개)
2) Introduce 1st semester calendar (events and contents)-1
학기 학사일정 소개
3) Elect the representatives of each class and the school(
, 학년, 학교 대표 선출)

In other news, we also held our first “Show and Tell” time on Thursday. I want to encourage students and parents to use the class website to find out the latest news, and to stay up-to-date with homework and tests. I posted pictures of our Show and Tell time on the website. For students who did not participate in Show and Tell this week, they can bring in something next week. Again, here is the website address:

www.3-1kisq.blogspot.com

The “Show and Tell” activity is a good chance for students to practice free-speaking and question asking.

Science

In Science class, we are studying plants, and I would like to thank the parents who have donated small plants. More are welcome~! We are studying page A10 and A11 in the Science book, and the important vocabulary of this lesson is “predict.” To show children what “predict” means, we have a toy turtle in the classroom that grows when it is in water. Everyday we try to predict how big it will grow, and every student can change their guess. Next week, we will make plans for each student to plant a seed in a small pot of soil, and maintain the plant as it grows.

Reading/Comprehension

In addition to our regular textbooks, we did a “fill in the blank” activity that was about the history of video games. I taught the students the meanings of the vocabulary both in English and Korean. These words will be used in next week’s spelling list.

Oral/Vocabulary

We continue to use the Harcourt series, and the student workbooks are on their way. This week, I taught the students how to organize words into “alphabetical order.” This is a fun way to further explore words.

Writing/Grammar

I am happy with the effort the students are putting in to their English diaries. However, in order to earn a sticker I want to enforce a minimum of 5 full sentences. Please assist the students with the diaries, and allow them to make mistakes. The main mistakes I want to address are:

1) Verb usage – past-tense when writing about things that have already happened.

2) Capital letters used for proper nouns (days, months, names of people and places etc.), and at the beginning of a sentence.

3) Punctuation – periods at the end of a sentence.

4) Neatness – writing carefully, legibly, and smaller print.

I would like the diaries to be submitted to me on Monday and Thursday rather than daily. The English Diary and the Korean Diary should also be in different notebooks.

In the coming weeks I will begin to teach students how to handwrite with pen in script.

The Megaflash 3 book is very useful, and the students enjoy using it. Some students seem to be working ahead with tutors, but I prefer if each student is on the same page at the same time so we can work together in class.

Homework

I will be using the class website to assign homework, and I would like students to get in the habit of checking the website everyday. As well, I will provide optional fun assignments that students might want to complete for extra stickers. When using the website to assign homework, I will make it easy to find at the very top.

Here are next week’s Daily English and Spelling Lists.

Show and Tell

Today we had our first "Show and Tell" time. We went to the school's new library, and I taught the students how to ask and answer questions using the "5 W's." These are: WHO, WHAT WHEN, WHERE, WHY (and HOW).

We asked questions like: What is it? Who gave it to you? Where did you get it? When did you get it? Why do you like it? How old is it? etc.

Here are some photos.

Cindy went first. She showed us some middle-school badges that her mother used to wear on her uniform. Very nice~^^
Neil showed us his StarCraft manual. He got it as a birthday gift from his uncle three years ago. Neil is a StarCraft genius who likes Terran the best.
Daniel showed us his new handphone. His mother's friend gave it to him. It has a camera and many other functions. He also likes to play games with it. Everyone can remember when they got their first handphone.: )
Min showed us his favorite book. It is similar to a comic book, and has many funny stories in it. He bought it in Mokpo three years ago. It has 258 pages.
Bryan also showed us his favorite book. It is similar to a comic book, and is all about dinosaurs. He bought this book in Korea one month ago.
Sally decided to show us her wonderful hair band. Her mother bought it in China for 15 RMB. Sally says she doesn't really like it kikiki.
Tom showed us his new badge. His grandfather gave it to him. His grandparents visited his family this week. They came from Korea by airplane. The badge is very shiney and looks like a soldier's medal.
Andy showed us his taekwando medals that he won in Incheon three years ago. He also demonstrated his kicking skill. Good job Andy!
For the students who brought something for Show and Tell today, do not bring something next week. For the students who didn't bring something this week, try get something ready to bring next Thursday.

Good work students. Show and Tell was fun~~~~*^,^*

Fun Homework! "Show and Tell!"

Dear Parents and Students,

Have you ever heard about Show and Tell ? It is a fun way to show the class something interesting, and tell everyone all about it. You can bring an object to class, and it can be anything you want. BUT please do not bring anything that is too big (like an elephant), too expensive (like your Mother's diamond ring), or too dangerous (like a ninja sword).

Good things to bring in might be something really really old (like a doll your grandmother had), or something really really strange (like a monkey's skull), or something really really funny or interesting (like a singing Spiderman doll).

If you are not ready to bring something tomorrow, you can bring something next week, or the week after. Every student will have a chance to do Show and Tell. Think about what you will tell the class, and how you will show it.

Maybe tomorrow will be an interesting day! Let's try to have Show and Tell every Thursday.

Organization

Dear Parents,

Organization is very important in the classroom. Please try to make sure that your children do not forget their books at home, especially Megaflash 3. As well, I give the students many photocopies during the week - these include the weekly newsletter, spelling lists, Daily English lists, and handouts we do in class. I think one A4 sized "clear file pocket folder" with at least 40 pages is the best way to keep these photocopies together and organised. The folders the students have now do not keep loose papers organized effectively. Please supply your children with one of these in the near future.

Weekly Newsletter

Friday, March 9th, 2007

Dear Parents,

The first full week of school is finished, and I really enjoyed getting to know the students. They are very lively, intelligent, and ready to learn. As a group, the students have similar abilities, and I am very pleased to see the students help each other and cooperate.

I have created a website for parents and students to use in order to keep track of what is going on in our classroom. I will update it weekly, with both the “Daily English” and the spelling test vocabulary list. I will also include other news, events, and curriculum information, complete with pictures and video. The address for this site is:

www.3-1kisq.blogspot.com

This website will be more informative than the weekly newsletter, and I will also be posting the weekly newsletter on the site in case students lose the papers on the way home.

Last week, I asked the children what topic they wanted to study, and we brainstormed many possible topics. They finally chose “video games” as the most interesting. I will therefore be using this topic from time to time with relation to vocabulary, reading, and writing. If students have a true interest in the topic they study, I believe they will remember what they learned more easily.

Here is some information on what was covered this week:

Reading Comprehension: We are using the red “Trophies” book as our reading book. We read the first story about a chameleon. The school has ordered workbook which will arrive soon. Until then, I will give the students photocopies.

Oral Vocabulary: We are using “Everyday Spelling” as our book, but I feel this book is not challenging enough and a bit boring. So I often use my own materials which the students enjoy. The focus for this week was on the different parts of sentences: proper nouns, common nouns, verbs, and adjectives. I also encourage students to read their work out loud to the class. We did this with the “What Are Friends For” handout where students make their own story.

Science: We are using a book called “Earth Sciences,” and the first unit is about living and non-living things. Plants are part of this unit, so I am hoping to get some plants for the classroom. If any parents would like to donate a small plant, it would be appreciated.

Writing Grammar: We are using the blue “Megaflash 3” book. It is a very good book that the students understand and enjoy using. I will use this often for homework. This week we did the first 5 pages dealing with nouns and proper nouns.

English Diary

I also began an “English Diary” program which will improve the students writing. I expect them to give me their diaries twice a week: on Thursday and Monday. On Thursday, I want them to write about the things they liked and disliked at school, and about anything else that interests them. On Monday, I want to know about their weekend. Please supply the students with a notebook that is used only for the English diary. The notebook should be large enough for students to rewrite and correct their mistakes on the same page. This is A4 size.

Please limit the amount of help you give your children with the diary. It is ok to coach them, but I want them to make mistakes so that I can correct the mistakes and show them how to write proper grammar. Students should write at least 5 sentences. The most common error is with verb usage. Students have trouble using “past-tense” verbs when they write about something that has already happened. For example, “I eat pizza on Sunday” should be “I ate pizza on Sunday.”

Super Students Sticker Chart

I want to provide students with an incentive to do well in class. Effort and diligent study will be rewarded, as well as good behavior, respecting the classroom, being polite, and being kind to classmates. Students can use their stickers to get prizes. Below is the reward system:

8 Stickers = 1 ice cream

15 Stickers = 1 small toy

20 Stickers = stationary (pencil, pen, eraser etc.)

30 Stickers = 1 medium toy

50 Stickers = 1 large toy

Birthdays

If your child is having a birthday, please contact either myself or Mrs. Choi so we can arrange a small party.

Show and Tell

Starting next week, we will begin a “Show and Tell” program on Wednesdays where students can bring in an interesting object and show it to the classroom. This can be a toy, a family heirloom, an interesting knick-knack, or even a book they really like. It can be anything as long as they can “show and tell” the class something interesting. Only 5 students per week will present to the class, and we will decide who will do so when on Monday, and I will post a schedule on the class website.

Tests

Friday will be the test day for spelling, and Daily English. I don’t want my tests to be too easy or too hard, and this week’s test will be a measure to see if I need to make things harder or more easier. Since we are the high-level grade three class, and each student is very eager and capable of learning, I intend to challenge them with interesting curriculum.

Thanks for your attention, and please view the class website for updates, and next week’s spelling list.

Regards,

Mr. Garrioch

Weekly Newsletter 1

Dear Parents,

A new school year is about to begin, and I’m very pleased to have the privilege of teaching your children. Before I begin to outline the kind of year I hope we are going to share together, I would first like to introduce myself.

My name is Scott Garrioch, and I’m a Canadian with 5 years of teaching experience in South Korea. I first began teaching at a hakwon in Ulsan in the autumn of 2000, and, after completing my first contract, I returned back to Canada. After a year at home, I began to miss Korea, so I returned to Korea in order to seriously pursue success as a teacher in Seoul. Rather than continuing to teach in hakwons, I instead chose to teach in private public schools, and I completed two contracts with university-sponsored elementary schools; the first being Kwangwoon Elementary in Seongbukgu, and the second being Chungdae Busook Demonstration Elementary, in Heuksukdong. I am therefore very familiar with the high standard of education expected in Korean private public schools such as KISQ.

Following these contracts, I began to travel all over Asia over the course of one year. I explored most parts of China, visiting most major cities, and one of those cities was Qingdao, which deeply impressed me. During this time, I decided that I wanted to further build on my experience in Korea by freelancing and working temporary contracts. These included business related contracts with Samsung, and summer and winter camps with Korean Minjok Leadership Academy, where I manage the school’s drama program and continue to assist in recruiting teachers.

Having developed keen interest in both Korean and Chinese cultures, I felt that moving to Qingdao, while working in a progressive Korean international school, would be the perfect way to advance my career. I am very happy to be here, and hope to establish a good working relationship with both you, the parents, and especially with your child.

I feel that grade 3 is a very important year in childhood education, and is the perfect time to embrace the beginnings of a more mature enthusiasm for learning. My teaching style focuses on creating enthusiasm, and I don’t feel that learning English should only be about learning English. Instead, I try to use English as the vehicle for learning about other things that truly interest the children. I feel this is the best way to learn English, and it is also the strongest new trend in many of Korea’s best English academies. When all students are involved in class activities and enjoying what they are doing, I feel I have reached my goal as a teacher. My unconventional method of teaching has proven to work well, and I intend to provide the students with high incentives for giving their best effort in class. As a homeroom teacher, I can offer more than English alone, and can broaden their language abilities by also opening up their minds to creative study.

I feel it is important for parents, teachers, and students to know each other well, and to maintain good communication. If you have any special information about your child that you would like to provide me with, or if you would like to ask questions, please feel free to contact me by email at scottgarrioch@gmail.com . I also look forward to meeting you in person.

Let’s make 2007 a wonderful year~^^ I hope it brings us all happiness and success.

Regards,

Scott Garrioch

A blog for our classroom~^^

The first full week of school is now underway, and I have decided that creating a blog for our classroom will be a good way to keep in touch with parents, and a good way to keep our memories alive in the classroom. As well, students can keep track of what we did, and what we will do. I encourage parents and students to leave comments, and to contribute to this blog.

Our seating arrangement and desk layout attempts to give each student a good view of the teacher and blackboard. We want to have a beautiful classroom! No garbage on the floor, and no writing on the tables.

I try to teach the students how to sit like good students: back straight, hands together, eyes on the teacher, and great big smiles.:)

Below, you will also see our new sticker chart. This provides an incentive for students to study hard, behave in class, write in their English journals, and finish their homework. Students can earn snacks from the cafeteria, pens and pencils, small toys, and other rewards for their efforts.

Break-tim e is a good way for students to burn up extra energy that might dis tract them from study. Good job guys! Very good foot skills yo u can use for soccer!

Finally, I would like to introduce you to our classroom mascot. Spiderman sings and dances for us when we need something to perk us up.

Thanks for visiting our classroom website. I will be updating this every week. Along with sending the weekly letter home, I will be posting it on this website in case students lose it. Along with the weekly letter, I will also include the week's "Daily English" list, and the spelling words for the weekly test.

Next week, we will begin to make our classroom even more beautiful. If parents would like to donate plants, we would appreciate it. We are learning about plants in Science at the moment. As well, we are thinking about getting a pet for our classroom. Students are asking for a puppy...but I think something smaller and easier to look after is a better idea. Maybe a great big spider or a snake....or a turtle or praying mantis.

Here is this weeks Daily English study list:

1. Excuse me, can you tell me how to get to the post office?

2. I lost my handphone. Can you help me find it?

3. What kind of music do you like?

4. I'm going to go shopping next weekend.

5. I went to the beach last weekend.

6. Always wash your hands before dinner.

7. Never bite your finger nails.

8. Try to make your bed every morning.

9. Eat lots of fruit and vegetables.

10. An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
