Weekly Newsletter #7

Friday, April 13th, 2007

Dear Parents,

Friday the 13th is a very unlucky day in western culture. Today I taught the students about why it is unlucky. Hopefully it turned out to be lucky.^ ^

Thank you for attending the Open House on Wednesday. I hope you liked our classroom and are satisfied with the progress made. I look forward to making class 3-1 better with your cooperation. Thank you to the PTA for giving us plants and the curtains. The classroom is looking better every week.

Mid-term Tests are coming up, and I would like to have them on April 25th. These tests will try and encompass everything we have learned up until this point.

Science Day Awards will be given this Monday in the auditorium. Based on enthusiasm, and effort put into the experiment, one student from every class will be chosen. Unfortunately, our “Mentos+Cola=Explosion” experiment did not work very well. I asked every student to write a reason why they think the experiment failed, and the students had some good observations. If any parents and students would like to try the Mentos+Cola=Explosion experiment at home, and make a video of the experiment, I would be happy to put it on the website and award 5 stickers!

Now I will review what we did this week, and what we hope to do next week.

Reading/Comprehension

We read the story “The Enormous Turnip” this week in the Harcourt reading book. The students should have completed up to page 21 in the workbook.

Oral/Vocabulary

Every month, I want to award the student who had the highest scores in both the Weekly Spelling and Daily English. This month, Vicky had the best scores. In 5 spelling tests, she only spelled 4 out of 100 word incorrectly, and her Daily English was perfect for 5 weeks in a row. Great job Vicky!

Students have asked me to change the test days from Friday to Monday so they have more time to prepare. The next test is therefore on Moday.

This week’s pop song was “Supercifragilisticexpialidocious” by Mary Poppins. It is available for viewing on the website.

Writing/Grammar

Most students did a good job of correcting the pages in their journals marked with a purple star. Some students are doing there corrections in a different notebook which is a good idea. Please try to make your journals nice and tidy and clean. The best journal for every month will get a reward. This month, Daniel had the best journal. He wrote in it a lot and made the corrections. Good job Daniel!

The Megaflash class has been going well. We made our Verb Books this week. Each student should have 40 pages with 39 verbs in their book. For each verb, they have to write two sentences: one in the past-tense and one in the present-tense. I gave each student a verb sheet to help them with the sentences. This book is now homework and should be finished by Monday. I will give each student a mark for how nice it looks.

For the students in Miss O’s class, they have also been learning verbs, and should review pages 41 to 48.

Science

We had our re-write test on Friday for plants. Hopefully the scores improved. We also began Unit 2 which is about animals. We watched some videos about “predators.”

Soon, I want to begin a program where every student begins a project studying an animal. Gradually, they will research information about this animal and add it to their poster. This will involve a lot of cutting and gluing and looking for pictures.
